In Maine there is no cost for Maine residents to take the HiSET test. You can take the test if you’re not a Maine resident, but you do have to pay for it. It’s a little less than $60 for non-Maine residents to take the test. There are no fees for tutoring and/or classes to prepare for the HiSET either. Sometimes people choose to purchase some inexpensive materials provided by the program, but materials are available on loan.
No. We serve people from all over the state of Maine – any resident of Maine can register for our courses.
In Maine, we offer the option to take the High School Equivalency Test. This test replaced the General Educational Development (GED) Test in Maine. Upon passing the HiSET Test you earn a Maine High School Equivalency Diploma, just like the GED . The value is the same and it’s still available at no cost thanks to Maine legislature. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at adultedinfo@ellsworthschools.org or 207.664.7110. Our HiSET program is very individualized and starts with a free and confidential advising session. At this session people learn about what to expect on the test, the different ways to prepare for the official test and how this option compares to other options for attaining a high school credential.
We offer HiSET Testing at least three times each week, usually one morning, one afternoon and one evening. Additional testing sessions, including weekend sessions are available as schedules allow. Monthly HISET testing sessions are posted on our website, but are subject to change. Before you start testing, you’ll need to meet with our advisor, take some pre-tests and make a plan to prepare as needed.
It’s impossible to predict how long it will take an individual to prepare for the HiSET test as everyone has a different educational background, learning styles, schedule and aptitude, but after a handful of sessions you’ll make a tentative plan. We’ve had folks take a couple years and others take a couple weeks. Whatever your path, we will support you!

We strive to bring people together for in-person classes as much as possible. We feel that building community is an invaluable feature of a local adult education program. However we have learned the value of online learning over the last years. So you’ll find most of our courses are in-person but we will always have some that are online. There are a few factors that we consider when deciding the format of courses and our goal is to consider each class when we collaborate with instructors/organizations to offer new programming. Each class should have an indication of location and format.
