Literacy Volunteers come to Hancock County!

Ellsworth Adult Education and Literacy Volunteers of Bangor have partnered to deliver individualized literacy support to adults in Hancock County.  Community volunteers are needed to help fill this need.  If you enjoy teaching, coaching, and mentoring adults individually, then learn more about becoming a trained Literacy Volunteer and serving the local need through a local adult educaiton program in Hancock County.     For about an hour or two a week, you can help an adult work toward goals like:  a high school diploma, a driver's license, a better job, preparing for college, or reading to their children.  You can also provide tutoring and coaching to an English Language learner.

For more information about local program and tutoring opportunities, please contact Annie Sargent at Ellsworth Adult Education 207.664.7110 or asargent@ellsworthschools.org.

An orientation will be provided in Ellsworth for Hancock County tutors on Monday, September 18, 8:30am-10am.   If you're interested in exploring English Language tutoring we encourage you to stay from 10am-12pm when Literacy Volunteer-Bangor trainer Meredith Eaton will conduct a English Language Conversation Partner Training.  You can register for these at ellsworth.maineadulted.org.

Tutor training certification classes will be offered in Bangor this Fall.   Once you complete this training, you'll be able to tutor in Hancock County.  We work with local adult education programs to create tutor/student matches as close to home as possible.   Local adult education programs will also provide ongoing support for you and your student.

Below you'll find some information about the upcoming trainings.  We hope to coordinate a carpool to the trainings.  Contact asargent@ellsworthschools.org for updates.  For more information and registration please go to www.lvbangor.org/volunteer .

INTRODUCTION TO LITERACY  This training provides you with an introduction to the issues of adult literacy in the region as well as an orientation to what’s involved with becoming a literacy volunteer. At the end of the session you’ll have a sense if becoming a tutor is a good fit for you and you can make a decision about whether to pursue training in Basic Literacy or English Language.

9/25/2017 6-8pm, EMCC, Bangor

BASIC LITERACY TUTOR TRAINING   The written word bombards us daily. We’re expected to fread information constantly. For about 25% of our population, reading proficiently is difficult and sometimes impossible. Teaching an adult to read does not require an education degree. It does require patience and the desire to help transform an adult’s life through literacy. The 12-hour training certification provides teaching strategies, adult learning models, and information on learning disabilities and lesson planning.  A follow up session will be held on January 8, 2018

Mondays 9/25/17-10/30/17; 5:30-8:30pm;

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TUTOR TRAINING   Imagine living in a community where you do not understand the language and cannot read the written word. Now, imagine yourself as part of someone’s solution. Teaching a person to speak and read English doesn’t require that you know their language. It means you have to have the patience and desire to teach language, reading skills and cultural differences. This 12-hour training certification covers second language acquisition, working with cultural differences, and teaching methods.  A follow up session will be held on January 8, 2018

Monday 9/25/17 and then Tuesdays 10/3/17-10/24/17; 5:30-8:30pm;

We hope to hold Hancock County daytime trainings in the Winter/Spring 2018.    If you'd like updates on these sessions, please contact asargent@ellsworthschools.org.
