  • You will be awarded a HiSET when you pass all five subjects with a minimum score.
  • If you have a documented disability that would keep you from taking the HiSET in the way it’s usually given, you might be entitled to receive testing accommodations.  Find out more about this!
  • You can retake a segment of the test, if you do not pass it the first time.
  • When you take any part of the HiSET your transcript will be filed with the Maine Department of Education.  If you do not complete the Official Test you can finish with us or anywhere in the United States and beyond!

Am I ready to take the test?

Passing the HiSET may require some preparation.   Ellsworth Adult Education provides, classes, small group tutoring and independent study work - whether you need intensive work or simply need to brush up in certain areas.

Steps to achieving a HISET Diploma

  1. Schedule an orientation and enrollment meeting with our student advisor.
  2. Begin taking the HISET Practice Test at one of our learning centers. The test questions are similar in content, difficulty, and format.  The Practice Tests are an excellent tool to help you decide when you are ready to take the Official HISET Test.
  3. You work with a teacher to design a program that meets your knowledge and skills, interests, learning style and goals.
  4. When you and your teacher decide you are ready, you schedule a time to take the Official HiSET Test.   You will take the test at a pace that makes sense for you.   You decide which tests to take and when you take them.
  5. After 2-3 weeks, Ellsworth Adult Education will receive your Official HISET Transcript and Diploma.   You have the option of meeting with your student advisor or the program director to review your results to assist you in making plans for your future.  She can recommend further educational opportunities or provide guidance in career planning.
  6. You will be invited to participate in our graduation ceremony to receive your diploma.   You wear a cap and gown and a photographer is available to take photographs.
